JAPANESE CRATER GETS NEW LAVA DOME

An ominous quiet descended around Mount Unzen as a new lava dome grew in its crater Friday, and ash stymied soldiers trying to recover the last of the 38 people believed killed in Monday's fiery avalanche.

Authorities in Shimabara, a city of 45,000 at the foot of the volcano, expanded the official evacuation area, bringing to more than 7,200 the number of people ordered from their homes. Fines up to $75 would be levied against anyone found in the off-limits areas, said Hideaki Nishikawa, a city official.Officials at the national Meteorological Agency's Unzendake Observatory said the new dome of lava could break through hardened lava near the top of the crater on the 4,452-foot mountain.
