An artist and an industrialist received honorary degrees at the 43rd commencement of Salt Lake Community College Saturday.
Commercial artist Dawna Barton, who established Frame Markers, a company specializing in the framing, marketing and transportation of valuable art, and Abraham "Mark" Markosian, founder and president of Mark Steel Corp., received the degrees.Barton received some of her early professional training at the old Salt Lake Area Vocational School, which became Salt Lake Community College in 1987.
She has begun a wholesale print distributorship, Portfolio Graphics, and is a wholesale supplier of her own prints, Dawna Barton Inc.
Markosian founded Mark Steel in a tiny building on 600 South in 1968. Today it is Utah's largest custom fabricator. Its three plants ship about 1,000 tons of steel each month.
A Murray High graduate in 1940, Markosian worked for 13 years for The Lang Co., Utah's first electric welding shop, and then earned degrees from Tulane and Harvard universities. He worked with Titan Steel and Vulcan Steel before starting Mark Steel.
He is chairman of the SLCC Foundation Board, a group of 20 Utah businessmen who assist the college in funding worthwhile
