BAKER LEADS LOGJAMMED PROVO OPEN

Amateur Jon Baker, a former BYU golfer, fired a 2-under-par 69 to take the lead over a logjammed field after the first round of the Provo Open at East Bay Golf Course.

Seven golfers are tied for second at 70, while another 11 golfers are bunched at even-par 71.The golfers at 70 included pros Terry Outzen, Bruce Brockbank, Kim Thompson and Mike Malaska along with amateurs Kurt Bosen, Yasu Toshima and Bob McClurg.

At 71 are pros Lynn Landgren, Greg Stimpson, Henry White, Matt Johnson and Steve Schneiter. The amateurs at even-par include Russ Madsen, Ben Maddox, Randy Robertson, John Taylor, Eddie Heinen and Ron Hitchcock.

Baker played for BYU from 1985 to 1988 and then went on an LDS mission, returning late last year.

Four golfers, pro Bruce Summerhays and amateurs Rich Rawdin, Todd Barker and Brad Sutterfield, are in contention with 72s.

The final round will be played Sunday with the leaders going out between 2 and 2:30 p.m. The professional winner earns $1,500.
