Arantxa Sanchez Vicario defeated Mary Joe Fernandez in singles and then teamed with Conchita Martinez for a doubles victory as Spain defeated the United States 2-1 to capture its first Federation Cup title Sunday.

The U.S. took a 1-0 lead when Jennifer Capriati defeated Martinez 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in the opening singles match. Sanchez Vicario beat Fernandez 6-3, 6-4 to even the match. Sanchez Vicario and Martinez then defeated Gigi Fernandez and Zina Garrison 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the doubles match.
