A petition by a group of pastors and lay people asks the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to reject a proposed resolution on abortion and take a stronger stand against it.

The commission proposal, scheduled for the denomination's assembly in Orlando, Fla., Aug. 28-Sept. 4, would approve abortion only when a pregnancy threatens the mother's life, when the fetus is fatally deformed, or in the case of rape or incest. The substitute would reject abortion "for any reason other than saving the life of the mother."
