Swiss police said Wednesday they have arrested a suspect in the slaying earlier this month of former Iranian prime minister Shapour Bakhtiar.

A terse police statement said a man who identified himself as Ali Rad Vakili was arrested in the Lake Geneva region. But the statement said the identity could not be immediately confirmed because he did not carry any papers. Officials declined to give further details.

Ali Rad Vakili is one of three names on an international warrant issued by French police following the Aug. 6 assassination of Bakhtiar at his home outside Paris.
