The Provo School Board held a closed executive session Wednesday evening to discuss buying property for a new Independence High School.

During the nearly two-hour session, board members and district administrators visited possible sites. After the meeting, board President Mossi White would not reveal whether those sites were undeveloped land or had buildings on them. She also would not say how many locations the board toured or discussed.

"I really cannot give you any information at this time," White said.

In addition to the properties discussed Wednesday, the board is considering three parcels of district-owned land on which to build Independence High. It has yet to settle on a site, although six acres near 950 S. 1100 West appeared to top the list at the board's last meeting. Residents living in that area are adamantly opposed to the school being built there.

The financially strapped district will have to dig deep to come up with money to buy property.

"We have a little money," said Superintendent Kay Laursen. Should the district use some of its capital funds to purchase land, it may delay other construction proj-ects, he said.

White said the district will have to acquire property "while there is still property to be had" whether it be for Independence High or another school in the future.
