Solidarity Prime Minister Jan Krzysztof Bielecki surprised the nation

Friday, submitting his government's resignation in a clash with the communist-dominated Parliament over budget cuts."I do not agree to be the object of a surrealist game, a figurehead for a few months, because this will lead the state to chaos and anarchy, " Bielecki said in a lengthy statement before the Sejm, or lower house.

Following the speech Bielecki, his entire Cabinet and President Lech Walesa walked out of the Parliament building.

The resignation must be considered by the Sejm, which recessed following Bielecki's dramatic speech and then reconvened to discuss forestry matters.

The crisis was touched off when a post-communist deputy, Wieslawa Ziolkowski of Labor parliamentary floor group, suggested in Thursday's budget debate that the Sejm recall the Cabinet but retain it in a caretaker role.
