Rebels agree to U.N. talksLeftist guerrillas line up along a road in El Salvador to welcome the first United Nations observers to move into the rebel-controlled area. U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar has invited Salvadoran President Alfredo Cristiani and rebel leaders to take part in talks in New York on Sept. 16, 17, an invitation that the rebels have accepted. Perez de Cuellar hopes to end the impasse in U.N.-mediated talks between Cristiani's right-wing government and the guerrillas. The 12-year-old civil war has claimed the lives of an estimated 75,000 people, most of them civilians.
