A Midvale man was being held without bail Friday on child abuse charges that followed the injury of his 22-month-old daughter, who died Thursday at Primary Children's Medical Center.

Dwane Anthony Montano, 23, was arraigned on the child abuse charge in 3rd Circuit Court Thursday. The charge is the second time Montano has been accused of abusing his daughter. In November 1989, Montano was charged with second-degree felony child abuse after his daughter, Jade, then 1 month old, suffered brain damage after he shook her and dropped her on her head.

West Valley Detective Ron Edwards said Montano was under court order to stay away from his daughter when he went to visit his wife, Corrine, at her West Valley apartment Saturday.

Emergency personnel were called to the apartment after the girl experienced difficulty breathing, and she was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center where she remained until she died Thursday evening.

Montano was arrested after paramedics suspected abuse because of the nature of the child's injuries.

Edwards attended a Friday autopsy for the girl and said work has been prepared to amend the charges because of the child's death.
