A Salt Lake County firefighter hoses down a wood box - as well as nearby weeds that caught fire - in a staged demonstration of a fire-retardant foam the fire department is considering for use in protecting homes in wild-land fires. Firefighters placed three wooden boxes in a field Thursday afternoon and coated two of them with the foam, testing the product to see if it works as advertised. All three boxes in the field were still standing when the brush fire died down, but the one without the foam coating was the only one in flames; the two foam-coated boxes were only charred, which is just what manufacturers promised.
