A Christmas card drawn in 1958 by an 18-year-old John Lennon was sold Thursday to an unidentified Japanese bidder for $14,784 at a London auction, said a New York spokeswoman for Christie's auction house.
The eight-page card, inscribed "Our First Christmas," was drawn for art student Cynthia Powell, who later became Lennon's first wife, the spokeswoman said. The front of the card shows the bespectacled Lennon gazing lovingly at Powell. Inside are numerous expressions of affection from the future rock star.
The card, along with other Lennon artifacts, were auctioned off by the slain Beatle's first wife at a special Christie's London sale of rock memorabilia.
At the rock auction, an anonymous bidder bid $9,610 for a guitar once smashed by Pete Townshend of the rock group The Who.
The Hard Rock Cafe, U.S.A., paid $8,870 for the boxer's robe worn by Elvis Presley in his 1962 film "Kid Galahad," and $8,870 for the "Lovesexy" getup worn by singer Prince at the 1988 Grammy Awards show, Christy's said.
