Pittsburgh Penguins coach Bob Johnson underwent emergency surgery early today after an apparent stroke and the recurrence of a previous, unspecified condition, the team doctor said.

Johnson, who led the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup championship last season, was taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance at about 9:30 p.m. EDT. He had been at the hospital earlier in the day after complaining of not feeling well.
