The Deseret Medical Division of Becton Dickinson & Co., 9450 S. State, has been changed to Becton Dickinson Vascular Access to reflect the division's concentrated focus on devices that provide entry into the blood system.
Vince DeCaprio, company president, said by combining the products from Deseret Medical and Becton Dickinson's Critical Care Monitoring Division, Becton Dickinson Vascular Access will broaden its offering while focusing on a single hospital market.Deseret was founded by three Utah residents in 1956 under the name of Deseret Pharmaceutical Co. In 1976 the company was sold and became Deseret Medical, a manufacturer of sterile, disposable medical devices such as intravenous catheters, surgical scrub brushes, surgical face masks and surgical prepping systems.
Becton Dickinson acquired Deseret Medical in 1986 and since then its sales have grown worldwide. Becton Dickinson was formed in 1897 and initially focused on hypodermic needles, syringes and fever thermometers. Since then the company has become a manufacturer of medical devices and diagnostic systems with worldwide sales of $2 billion.
There are 1,200 people employed at the Sandy plant and worldwide BD has 18,500 employees.
