Bountiful, the defending 3A champ and ranked No. 2 this year, gave Davis County rival Viewmont a beating to open the season. Coach Larry Wall's Braves used a powerful running game and a stingy defense to beat the 4A Vikings, 34-0 at Viewmont.
Travis Acord led the balanced Bountiful running attack with 77 yards and two touchdowns. For the game the Braves rushed for 257 yards, while Viewmont found moving the ball on the ground nearly impossible, losing 17 yards rushing for the game.Highland 26, Cyprus 0
At Cyprus, the No. 2 ranked Rams scored on a Jarrod Schropfer to Gary Langston 15-yard pass in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead and cruised to the shutout victory. Highland, the 4A runners-up last year, will host Granger next Friday.
Clearfield 35, Kearns 7
At Clearfield, the Falcons' Darryl Thompson scored on a 97-yard opening kickoff return to help Clearfield get off to a fast start. Clearfield used a balanced rushing attack with four runners getting 50-plus yards on the ground.
American Fork 33, Lehi 18
At American Fork, quarterback Dan Robinson passed for a pair of touchdowns to help the Cavemen to a 33-6 third quarter lead. Lehi scored a pair of fourth quarter TDs to make the final more respectable.
Springville 21, Jordan 7
In a battle pitting two ranked teams in the preseason Deseret News 3A coaches poll, the fourth rated Red Devils picked up a road victory over the No. 5 Beetdiggers.
After a scoreless first quarter, Springville, the defending Region 6 champions, scored one touchdown in the second quarter and two in the third. Coach Doug Bills' defense gave up only a third quarter score to Jordan.
West Jordan 17, Timpview 16
At Timpview, the Jaguars were led by Jason Nelson, who rushed for 82 yard passed for 42 more and kicked the game-winning field goal. Both teams scored on a pair of touchdowns and a field goal, but the difference in the game proved to be a blocked PAT by West Jordan's Aaron Winter.
Dixie 40, Carbon 13
Jeff Estlin got Dixie off on the right foot with a 90 yard punt return to open the scoring, and the Rebels opened up a 34-0 lead by halftime. Ryan Anderson rushed for a pair of Rebel touchdowns, including a 55-yard TD run in the third quarter.
East 21, Judge Memorial 11
At Judge Memorial, the 4A Leopards fell behind early, but scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to beat the 3A Bulldogs. Jamie Sage got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first with a 39-yard field goal in the first quarter.
San Juan 16, Beaver 12
San Juan, the top ranked 2A team, escaped with a narrow win at No. 3 Beaver. The game was a scorless tie through three quarters, but Beaver scored a pair of touchdowns early in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead. But the Broncos scored 16 unanswered points, with a pair of touchdowns and a safety, to comeback to win the game.
North Summit 34, South Summit 6
At South Summit, the 1A's top ranked Braves showed a fine passing attack in earning the victory. Brandon Jones threw for 289 yards and Cade Sargent had seven receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns in the blowout win over the 2A Wildcats.
Rich 38, Duchesne 8
Rich's Justin Groll rushed for 236 yards and five touchdowns in the Rebels' rout over Duchesne. Rich, using the wishbone, had 449 yards of total offense, while holding the Eagles to just 67 total yards.
Logan 29, Layton 28 (2OT)
At Logan, the Grizzlies spoiled Curtis Page's first game as Layton's coach in a double-overtime affair. The score was tied 14-14 at the end of regulation, with each team scoring seven points in the first overtime. Both team scored in the second overtime as well, but Logan's two-point conversion run by Ryan Jones was good to give the 3A team the win over the 4A Lancers.
