University of Kentucky students have apologized for printing a racially stereotyped line of the original lyrics of "My Old Kentucky Home" on a school datebook.

The publication of the line " 'Tis summer, the darkies are gay" on the back of the "Wildcat 1991-92 Datebook" upset some students and campus officials. The University Bookstore ordered the back covers on the datebook destroyed and offered refunds for those already sold.

The Kentucky House passed a resolution in 1986 calling for changing the original Stephen Foster lyric from "darkies" to "people."
