To the editor:

I refer to the Deseret News article Aug. 21 wherein it is reported that the Utah Legislature is seeking ways of avoiding a tax refund. This was a tax illegally collected from federal retirees for the years 1985 through 1989.The article implies the legislators are working hard to save Utah taxpayers money. The full story is the longer they wait the more it will cost; the debt is earning interest. Also, it should be noted that the refund is due a segment of Utah taxpayers who bring millions per year into Utah. Further, a timely refund would stop the pressure that these retirees feel toward removing themselves to a state that plays fair.
