The Salt Lake Trappers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but never led again as they dropped their opening game of the Pioneer League playoffs, 5-1 to Great Falls.

The Trappers got their lead in the second inning when three straight batters walked. Then infielder Todd Stefan grounded out to third base, scoring the go-ahead run.However, that was all the Trappers could produce. The Dodgers tied the score in the fourth on Frank Smith's single, scoring Jay Kirkpatrick. They took the lead in the fifth, when Henry Blanco led off with a home run on the first pitch of the inning. Then Tito Landrum doubled to left-center, scoring on Juan Castro's single.

The lead stretched to 4-1 in the sixth when Frank Smith doubled home a runner. Another run came in on the play, thanks to a Trappers' throwing error.

The Trappers left runners stranded on base all night.

The loss put Salt Lake at a 0-1 disadvantage in the best-of-three playoff series. The teams resume play in Salt Lake Monday at 7 p.m. If necessary, a third game will be played Tuesday at Derks.
