A freak accident on Redwood Road and a rollover in Big Cottonwood Canyon claimed the lives of a child and a man Sunday.
Killed:Stacey Hansen, 4, 4130 Oak Meadows Drive, West Valley City.
Mitchell M. George, 66, 2136 Scenic Drive, Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Robinson said the Hansen girl was killed when she fell out of a moving pickup truck and was struck by a passing car at about 4 p.m.
The driver of the pickup, David Robertson, 33, 4130 Oak Meadows Drive, was turning left from 5400 South to travel north on Redwood Road when the passenger door flew open, Robinson said.
A car driven by Brittin Higham, 19, Taylorsville, ran over the girl as she hit the pavement. Higham didn't stop immediately because she thought a doll rather than a child had fallen out of the truck, Robinson said.
The girl's mother, Annette Hansen, and two other children were also riding inside the pickup cab. The child was dead on arrival at Cottonwood Hospital.
George was killed when the car he was driving left the road and rolled near the Tanner's Flat area of Little Cottonwood Canyon about 4 p.m., said Salt Lake County Deputy Sheriff John Adams.
A passenger, George's wife, Nada, 61, was taken by air ambulance to LDS Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition Monday morning.
