After a spate of car holdups in southern Egypt, police traced the robbers to a small town and surrounded it, sparking a shootout that lasted 16 hours and claimed seven lives, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The al-Ahram newspaper said that in addition to the seven men killed, nine were wounded in the battle between dozens of policemen and the alleged robbers and their supporters. It said 90 men were arrested.
