Labor Day revelers flocked to the beaches in Texas, walked in a huge procession in Michigan and hooted and hollered their best foghorn imitations under clear blue skies in San Francisco on Monday.

While unusually cool weather forced people off the beaches in the Northeast, the temperature hit 92 degrees in San Francisco, shattering a 102-year-old heat record.But sunny weather didn't discourage a group of gravel-throated contestants at the 10th Annual San Francisco Fair from howling and growling their way through what's called a fog-calling contest.

Decked out in slickers and pirate gear, contestants bellowed out their best imitations of the traditional two-tone diaphone air-powered signal.

But the contestants' efforts conjured up nary a wisp of cloud.

In Dyersville, Iowa, a team of former major league baseball players faced a group of actors and other celebrities in a game on the diamond that was carved out of a cornfield for the 1988 movie "Field Of Dreams."

Bob Feller struck out Shoeless Joe Jackson. Reggie Jackson homered off Eddie Cicotte. Joe Pepitone and Lou Brock became pitchers. Beefy Larry Drake stole third base.

The celebrities were declared 9-4 winners even though Reggie Jackson and Pepitone hit three-run homers for the ballplayers.

In Michigan, Gov. John Engler led 70,000 people in the annual Labor Day walk across the 5-mile Mackinac Bridge that links the state's upper and lower peninsulas over lakes Michigan and Huron.

Tens of thousands hit the beaches in Texas, where rain during the weekend had dampened the holiday for many.

But temperatures in the low 70s left many New Jersey beaches nearly empty.
