To the editor:
With the cooperation of Layton Hills Mall, Layton City Police Department and Layton Jaycees, I watched as children's dreams came to life.At Layton Hills Mall's suggestion, the police department donated the bikes it usually sells at auction to the Jaycees for refurbishing and distributing to children who needed bikes and under normal circumstances wouldn't be able to get one.
Letters were written from neighbors, parents, relatives and the children themselves, expressing why they deserved the bikes.
I walked into the mall expecting the normal hectic school shopping scene, and what I saw were excited children wheeling bicycles down the halls.
A young girl dressed in her new school clothes stood close to her mother and older brother as they pointed to a bicycle soon to be hers. When her name was called, she hugged the announcer and the gentleman helping pass out the bikes. The young mother shook their hands and expressed her appreciation and gratitude.
As I looked around, I wasn't the only one wiping my eyes.
