To the editor:
I have just finished reading Ivan Lincoln's theater column about various upcoming seasons in town, and I find myself tremendously annoyed. He blasts the Pioneer Theatre Company season by claiming that its opener, " `Grapes of Wrath,' is gloomy and depressing." Please, Mr. Lincoln, this play is based on what is perhaps the greatest American novel. It won Tonys on Broadway. Can't you see its value?
And to say that "Uncle Vanya," "The 1940s Radio Hour," and "The Mystery of Irma Vep" have been done before borders on the ridiculous. Pioneer Theatre should be heartily congratulated for taking risks in its programming.
Apparently, Mr. Lincoln is yearning for the days of old when all we got was "Camelot," "Carousel" and the likes, ad nauseam.
Any theatergoer with any savvy and a drop of intelligence and a taste for the unique is applauding what is a fabulously innovative and satisfying season of theatrical delights. Bravo Pioneer Theatre, which by the way is the only equity theater between Denver and San Francisco.
