- Foreign exchange students arrive in S.L.:

Tanya Sincek of Witten, Germany, has arrived in Salt Lake City as an exchange student and will attend Jordan High this fall. She will soon be joined by Yumi Kobayshi of Japan as the school's other foreign exchange student.Tanja will be staying at the Bill and Janet Moore home in Midvale. When Yumi arrives, she will stay with Kerry and Mary Clark.

Both students are part of an exchange program organized through the ASPECT Foundation.

- Tara Goins participates in summer scholar program:

Tara Goins, a resident of Salt Lake City and student at Olympus High School, participated this summer in the George Washington University Summer Scholar program in Washington, D.C. Admission to the program was based on academic achievement and college entrance exams.

- Todd D. Hegy graduates from the Air Force Academy:

Todd D. Hegy, Sandy, was recently commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy. He was also awarded a bachelor of science degree.

He is the son of David E. and Phyllis M. Hegy of Sandy.

- Amy Kane is Fiesta Bowl Queen finalist:

Amy Kane, 20, Sandy, has been named one of five finalists for the 1991-92 Fiesta Bowl Queen at Arizona State University in Tempe.

Amy is a junior majoring in education. She is also vice president of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society.

The queen will be crowned in ceremonies on Sept. 19 at the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale.

Amy is the daughter of James and Sheila Kane of Sandy.

- Michele Mladejovsky on dean's list at Lawrence University:

Salt Lake's Michele Mladejovsky, a graduate of Highland High School, made the dean's list for academic achievement the past spring at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.

- Tony Nardi participates in theatre workshop:

Tony Nardi of Sandy recently participated in a theater workshop at Michigan State University's 19th annual summer youth program.

He was among approximately 1,000 junior and senior high school students from across the country who attended the summer sessions.

Tony is the son of Peter and Pat Nardi. He is a senior at Brighton High where he is a member of the National Honor Society, drama club and Spanish club.

- 90 years of service for Knights of Columbus:

In celebration of 90 years of service, council 602 will host a mass at St. Ann's Church, followed by a dinner and a dance at the Salt Lake Red Lion later this month.

The Knights of Columbus was organized in March of 1882 and 19 years later on Sept. 8, 1901, Council 602 was formed and chartered in Salt Lake.

Council 602 members devote much of their time promoting Catholic youth, church, family and community service activities. Growing in membership and stature, the group meets at 3638 S. 1300 East.

In his "Message to the Knights," Most Rev. William K. Weigand, seventh Bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City best describes the Knights of Columbus as "one of the most esteemed examples of lay dedication to and involvement in the life of the church."

He continues, "Over their history they have been a positive influence in the diocese in numerous ways: general leadership, promotion of vocations and vocation awareness, commitment to the pro-life movement, loyalty to the church and her leaders, and fidelity to Catholic teaching. I commend them also for their exemplification of the qualities of fraternity and charity."

- Bruce Johnson named scholar at Dartmouth:

Bruce Johnson, a freshman from Salt Lake City, has been named a Rufus Choate scholar at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Students who earn grade point averages in the top five percent of their class at the end of the academic year receive this honor.

Johnson is the son of Oriano Johnson and Karen Johnson of Salt Lake.
