To the editor:

Your recent editorial of Aug. 18 regarding the effectiveness of needle distribution to prevent AIDS was very interesting. However, we in the Salt Lake City-County Health Department prefer the method that we have been utilizing for a few years. It is less expensive and, we believe, quite effective.

We provide small bottles of a diluted bleach solution which, if used to rinse any needle, will prevent transmission of AIDS. We are distributing these very inexpensive but effective items through special contacts to the drug society as well as to others that might come in contact with intravenous drug abusers.
