A Greek-flagged tanker loaded with 300,000 barrels of crude oil ripped a hole in its hull Tuesday in Campos Bay, prompting the state petroleum company to suspend production in one of Brazil's largest offshore fields.

The tanker Theomana, according to a statement from the state oil monopoly Petrobras, was under contract from the company when it ripped a hole on the left side of its hull Tuesday morning in the Albacora field in Campos Bay, which opens into the Atlantic Ocean 120 miles north of Rio de Janeiro.The statement, which did not specify how much oil had so far leaked into the Atlantic, said a second ship was trying to close the hole Tuesday evening.
