To the editor:

Doris Day, founder of the prestigious Doris Day Animal League, said it best: "You can pick up a little mutt on the street that you've never seen before and be inspired by the love in its eyes, the depth of its soul, its innocence and purity. They come into this world pure and they leave it pure; they come in innocent and they go out innocent. You can't say that about most people, but the animals maintain that spiritual beauty throughout their lives."This certainly is pertinent to consider as the hunting season creeps up on us with its lethal combination of partying/slaughter and 12,000 muzzle loaders, 28,000 archers and 150,000 riflemen leveled on the innocents in the hills.

If there's a "thrill of the hunt" (stopping a heartbeat/watching the blood flow), we reject it as the Western-type norm. It's about as far from spiritual beauty as one could get.
