A Salt Lake County lab received a $1.02 million contract Tuesday to continue analyzing drug test samples for the Army.

Northwest Toxicology Inc., 1141 E. 3900 South, has analyzed Army drug test samples for 31/2 years, and is one of only three commercial labs nationwide authorized to handle military drug tests, lab director Sheran Smith said.The $1.02 million is the first increment in a contract that may be expanded to a maximum of $5.26 million.

Smith said the lab, which has been in business since 1985, does testing for 26 Western state national guards, for the nationwide Army recruiting command and for selected other installations and major commands nationwide.

She said the lab handles about 15,000 drug test samples a month for the Army, and does other work as well for commercial clients.
