A resident of Mexico, 29-year-old Pedro Alfredo Martinez, was in extremely critical condition at LDS Hospital Wednesday morning and not expected to live after an unidentified assailant crushed his skull with a car jack handle in downtown Salt Lake City.

Another man, Philipe DeLeon Romero, 23, address unknown, was apparently bludgeoned by the same suspect and was in critical condition at University Hospital, police said.The beatings occurred shortly after 7 p.m. under the 400 South viaduct on the south side of Pioneer Park. None of the witnesses to the incident speaks English.

Salt Lake police Lt. Ken Thirsk said the suspect was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and later released. David Reed, 34, address unknown, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault.
