Department of Corrections officials say they foiled an escape attempt by an inmate who fashioned a tool to spread apart the bars on his cell.

John L. Legg, who was serving sentences for Class A misdemeanor theft and felony burglary, has been charged with "possession of prohibited items, an implement of escape." The crime carries a penalty of 1 to 15 years in prison.
