After last week's loss to Florida State, there are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding Brigham Young University football.

Will the Cougars win another Western Athletic Conference championship? Can Ty Detmer repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner?

Will the reconstruction of north University Avenue be completed before the home opener Sept. 28?

The first two questions will be answered as the season runs its course.

But Marv Christiansen, project engineer for the Utah Department of Transportation can address the other question now.

"We're aiming for Sept. 10 to have most of the major items out of the way," he said. "There will be some landscaping and touch-up work, but that'll be off the road."

That means University Avenue from 1630 North to the mouth of Provo Canyon will be open in plenty of time for BYU's first home game of the season against Air Force Academy.

The road to Cougar Stadium will have two lanes of traffic in both directions. Christiansen said the wider street should alleviate some of the traffic congestion associated with BYU football games in the past. The bottlenecks resulting from single-lane traffic will be eliminated.

In addition to making travel easier, the $4.3 million project improves road safety, he said.

The heavily traveled thoroughfare will contain a 12-foot painted median and 10-foot shoulders on both sides of the street.
