Next to heating or cooling, water heating typically uses the largest amount of energy in the home, said Dr. Stephen Poe, Utah State University Cooperative Extension energy specialist.

By lowering your water heater's temperature, said Poe, you can save up to $75 a year.As homes have become more energy efficient in recent years, the percentage of energy used for heating water has steadily increased, said Poe.

Here is a list of no-cost maintenance procedures you can take that Poe says can save you money.

1. Set back your water heater thermostat. Many homes, said Poe, have the temperature set higher than necessary, typically 140-150 degrees. By lowering the temperature to 120 degrees from 150 degrees, you can save up to 15 percent on your water heating costs.

For most families, this would mean a savings of $50 to $75 per year. An added benefit is reducing potential scalding of young children with hot tap water.

2. Flush your water heater tank twice a year to remove sediment and keep the unit at maximum energy efficiency.

3. Clean or check oil or gas burners. Regular maintenance will improve performance and safety.

4. Turn off water heater when you go on vacation. Use caution when relighting, Poe emphasized.

5. Use cold water laundry washes when practical.

6. Don't run hot tap water continuously. Shaving or rinsing dishes does not require 15 gallons of hot water. Many bathroom or kitchen taps, however, can dispense five gallons per minute.

7. If your automatic dishwasher has a built-in booster heater, turn your thermostat down to 120 degrees. Most dishwasher heaters can boost the temperature at least 20 degrees. If your dishwasher does not have a heater, keep your thermostat at 140 degrees.
