The death toll in a new Sri Lankan army offensive rose to nearly 250 Thursday as Tamil militants tried to stop a military drive toward guerrilla bases in the northeastern jungles, military sources said.

The government launched the offensive Saturday at a cluster of camps that once served as the headquarters for Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
