A Florida business and a Japanese aviation partsmaker are at the heart of federal investigations into allegedly illegal shipments of military hardware to Iran in the 1980s.

The government on Wednesday charged Miami-based Aero Systems Inc. and two former executives of Aero subsidiaries with conspiring to deliver $7 million worth of navigation gear for F-4 Phantom fighter jets to front companies for Iran's military.The transfers allegedly took place from 1984 through 1987 and helped keep Iran's planes in the air in the war against Iraq.

Aero subsidiaries in Hong Kong and Singapore allegedly got the equipment from Japan Aviation Electronics Industry Ltd.
