Utah Highway Patrol investigators were looking for the driver of a car who fled the scene of a Thursday morning accident and left his passenger critically injured.
The driver entered U-36 to cross the road to a McDonald's restaurant in Lakepoint, Tooele County, when his car was struck broadside by a southbound vehicle. The driver of the car attempting to cross the highway drove from the scene of the accident into the restaurant parking lot and took off running, said UHP Trooper Jim Smith.Investigators believe the unidentified driver caught a ride on the freeway. Smith said he likely suffered some head injuries since his head hit and cracked the windshield. He left a 44-year-old Salt Lake man critically injured in the front seat.
The passenger, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was taken by helicopter to LDS Hospital, where he was in critical condition Thursday, a spokesman said.
Occupants of the southbound vehicle, Norman Herrington, 48, of Kearns, and Glen Taylor, 41, of West Valley City suffered minor injuries.
