Community groups can still seek a financial hand from the City Council.

The council considered adopting a policy that would prohibit it giving contributions to any group - sports teams, pageants, debate teams, school bands, etc. - unless the funds were approved as part of its budget. But, the council decided that activities that bring credit to the city are worth supporting. The policy adopted provides a maximum contribution of $1,000 for any single activity out-of-state for any winning team, group or individual in a year. The amount contributed by the city may not exceed 35 percent of the total expenses of the activity.

Contributions must be requested prior to an activity, according to the new policy. And recipients of funds must make a verbal report to the council about the outcome of the activity.
