SLM Corp. is voluntarily recalling approximately 267,000 sets of toy airplanes because the wings might break into small parts that young children could choke on, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says.

The recall involves Buddy L Motorized Zippers Airplanes, model numbers 3135, 3137, 4637 and 4160.The airplanes were sold in packages of two, three and four. They are 3 inches long with a wingspan of 21/4 inches. Embossed on the bottom are the words "Buddy L Corp. 1989 Patent Pending. Made in China." Each airplane in a pack is a different color, with two black tires in the back and a smaller black tire in the front.

The package reads in part: "Pull 'Em Back Let 'Em Zip! Motorized Zippers Airplanes, Buddy L Action . . . China."

The toys were sold in retail and toy stores from January 1989 to February 1991, at prices ranging from about $2 to $7.50 each, depending on the model.

The commissioner said it discovered the potential hazard during routine retail surveillance.

Neither the commission nor the company is aware of any injuries caused by the toy, the announcement said.

Consumers were urged to take the airplanes away from young children immediately and return them to the store where purchased for a refund. Consumers with questions may call SLM at 1-800-442-7440.
