Three of the quarterfinal matches for world championship challengers have been completed in Brussels, Belgium.

Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union defeated Viswanathan Anand of India, 4 1/2-3 1/2. Nigel Short of Britain triumphed over Boris Gelfand of the Soviet Union 5-3. Jan Timman of the Netherlands took advantage of lapses by Victor Korchnoi of Switzerland to win 4 1/2-2 1/2.The only match tie after the regulation eight games was between Artur Yusupov and Vasily Ivanchuk of the Soviet Union. This necessitated a pair of tiebreak games at the rate of 60 moves every 15 minutes thereafter.

Yusupov won the first and drew the second to reach the semifinals.

Against Karpov, Anand proved a tough opponent. It was not until the fourth game that Karpov won, and Anand won the sixth. Karpov took the match by winning the eighth game.

- THREE HUNDRED SECONDS - The Utah State Five Min-ute Championship will be held Sept. 21. It will be played at the Sandy Branch of the Salt Lake County Library (10100 S. Petunia Way - 1300 East).

In five-minute chess each player is given five minutes on a chess clock to play the entire game. Any player using more than five minutes for all his moves, loses. With players playing at blitz speeds, it makes a lie of the traditional reputation that chess is a slow and boring game.

Registration will be from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the library.

The first round will be at 11 a.m., and the tournament is expected to be finished around 3:30 p.m.
