A proposal to convert a home near WordPerfect into a day-care facility got the nod from the City Council this week.
The council voted 5-2 to approve a conditional-use permit for a day-care/preschool facility at 1090 N. 800 East. Beth George plans to convert the home on the site into a center for up to 88 children, staffed by 10 individuals. The council's motion included a requirement that George landscape the entire lot, erect a 7-foot-high masonry fence around a play area behind the house and fence most of the back yard.
Mayor Joyce Johnson and council members Jim Evans, Kelvin Clayton, Lucile Steele and Norm Woodhouse voted in favor of granting the permit, citing a need for day-care facilities in the city. Council members George Bailey and Keith Hunt voted against it.
Hunt opposed the request because of the amount of commercial development that has already taken place in the area. Bailey voted nay because he objects to "conditional-use permits being used as a zoning tool."
