Only modest gains in the job market are forecast for the Salt Lake area in the fourth quarter of 1991, according to an employment outlook survey by Manpower Inc.
Robert Katz, a spokesman for Manpower, said 26 percent of the area employers interviewed said they would add staff in the quarter, 19 percent will have fewer employees and 45 percent expect to keep their staffs at the present level."The anticipated boost in Christmas season activity normally accounts for much of the hiring at the end of the year, but this quarter any hiring gains in the whole-sale/retail trade industry are expected to be offset by staff reductions," Katz said.
The outlook was stronger three months ago when 29 percent of those surveyed said they would add staff and 10 percent said they would reduce staff.
Prospects for employment will be the best in durable goods manufacturing, transportation/public utilities, finance/insurance/real estate and services. Lower work force levels are expected in construction, education and whole-sale/retail trade.
