A motorcycle exploded Thursday after its driver crashed it into a parked Salt Lake police car.
Two officers were assisting a disoriented woman near 700 South 300 East about 3 a.m. Thursday. Both parked their vehicles on the street. A 20-year-old Layton man was driving a motorcycle at high speed when he saw the parked patrol cars and apparently panicked, police said. The motorcyclist lost control, struck another parked car and then skidded into the rear of one of the police cars. The motorcycle exploded and the driver got up and began running away. He was caught, however, by one of the officers. He was taken to LDS Hospital, where he was treated and later released.
Fire from the motorcycle partially burned one of the police cars.
