A low-fat diet may increase the effectiveness of drug therapy for lowering cholesterol to target levels, according to the Nutri/System Health & Fitness Information Bureau.

When a group of men and women with high cholesterol were given either a high- or low-fat diet in combination with a cholesterol-lowering drug for three weeks, researchers from the Rockefeller University in New York and Michigan State University discovered that 80 percent of the subjects who combined the low-fat diet with the drug reached their target cholesterol levels, while less than 50 percent of the subjects who combined a high-fat diet with the drug reached their target levels.
