Young minority composers are invited to submit orchestral compositions to a juried contest, sponsored by the University of Utah Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee.
The winning composition will be premiered by the U. Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Debaut, music director, at the Martin Luther King Jr., celebration in mid-January 1993.The prize is $3,000 cash, round-trip air fare to Salt Lake to attend the final two rehearsals, lodging and meals. The winning composer will be expected to give two perconcert lectures. Contest deadline is Aug. 1, 1992. The contest is for minority men and women under 35 who are U.S. citizens. Compositions should promote social justice and human rights. Works must never have been performed, although they may still qualify if they have been rehearsed by an orchestra. They may use chorus, narrator or vocal soloists.
Works more than 25 minutes long may be disqualified, due to rehearsal time limits. Judges will be prominent Western composers conductors and other artists.
