Did you know:
There are 14 ski areas in Utah, all tucked in between Logan to the north and Cedar City to the south.- Stacked one atop another, they would stand more than five miles high - 27,135 vertical feet.
- Put side by side, they would cover nearly 15,000 skiable acres.
- There are 92 lifts at Utah's resorts, ranging from hang-on-for-your-life rope tows to high-speed, four-passenger hang-onto-your-hat quads.
- There are 597 runs, ranging from gentle as a table top, to terrorizing cliffs.
- The average distance to a resort from downtown Salt Lake City is 71 miles. But, take away the three outlying areas - Beaver Mountain in Logan, Elk Meadows in Beaver and Brian Head in Cedar City - and the average drive drops to 46 miles.
- Buy the most expensive ticket at all 14 areas and the total for a day of skiing would be $336. Or, the average pass would be $24.
- And, take the average snowfall at each of the 14 areas, make one big pile and it would be nearly 500 feet deep.
All in all, Utah has some pretty impressive ski figures when you add them all up. And sales last year of 2.7 million passes - a record - proves skier like what they ski.
But, hidden by all the big numbers are some of the little-known facts about ski areas. For example, the most popular runs, the longest runs, the best runs to boost the ego or show off to friends.
Through the remainder of the winter, a closer look at Utah's ski areas will be taken.
To begin the series, a closer look at Park City has been taken today.
Beginning this Thursday, and running on following Thursdays, the other areas will be featured.
Next up will be Snowbasin.
