An Illinois man and a Missouri woman pleaded guilty Monday to kidnapping a 2-year-old Phoenix boy who was recovered safely two days later in Utah.
Dennis Ellwood Mills, 45, of Pekin, Ill., and Jennifer Rebecca Day, 19, of St. Louis, each pleaded guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court to kidnapping and custodial interference.Judge Ronald Reinstein scheduled Feb. 11 sentencings.
They were accused of wrestling Michele Lininger out of her car in a Phoenix parking lot Aug. 14. The woman's two daughters were able to jump out of the car, but the mother could not reach her son, Michael, who was strapped into a car seat.
The couple sped off in the Lininger car, but they were arrested in south-central Utah two days later after a chase involving the stolen car. The boy was found in the back seat uninjured.
