Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has urged her fellow Conservatives to stand by their principles as an election campaign approaches, the British Broadcasting Corp. said Saturday.

Thatcher said in a speech Friday night that the party could not rely on a barrage of statistics to combat the Labor Party, the BBC said.Although in the past Thatcher has been critical of her successor, Prime Minister John Major, she praised his handling of issues in the run-up to the election, which the government must call by July.
