Corn gluten meal could be a natural answer to crabgrass control, a researcher says.
The protein substance extracted from corn during processing interferes with germination in crabgrass and other annual weeds, said horticulturist Nick Christians of Iowa State University. At the same time, its 10 percent nitrogen content acts as a fertilizer.
The corn byproduct is less effective and more expensive than synthetic weed killers, said Christians, but it will offer consumers a good alternative to standard herbicides.
