To the editor:

Milton Maughan's letter (Forum, Jan. 13) might serve to boost a misconception about handicapped people. Must a person actually look handicapped to be considered handicapped? My wife has multiple sclerosis. While her appearance and walk don't always show it, she has a handicap. And we have handicap license plates. (We used handicap tags, which hang from the rearview mirror, until people accused us of parking illegally.) Some environmental conditions cause her symptoms to intensify. Handicap parking greatly eases her problem.

Because some handicaps are not discernible with the eyes, "normal" people should quit trying to judge people who legally park in handicap spaces.
