Elk Ridge is the third fastest-growing area in Utah County. According to the 1990 U.S. Census, the town grew 102.4 percent during the past decade, from 381 residents to its current official total of 771.

Mayor James L. Bean attributes the town's attractiveness as a bedroom community to its wide open spaces, crisp and clean air and its location along the borders of Gladstan Golf Course, owned by Payson City.Big families undoubtedly account for much of Elk Ridge's growth. The town has the youngest median age, 16.7, in the county. It also has the largest household size, 5.21, in Utah County.

Elk Ridge has no commercial businesses. And most residents prefer it that way, says Town Clerk Ernestine Folks.

Elk Ridge is known for its view of the valley, which residents believe is the nicest in the county because it is not obstructed by structures or obscured by pollution.

Origin of town's name Prior to becoming a town, the area was the Salem Hills subdivision. Town leaders held an election to choose an official name for the fledgling town at the time it was incorporated. Voters chose between Elk Ridge, Mount Loafer and Oak Ridge. A herd of elk winters on the town borders.

Did you know? Elk Ridge is the home of Lewis Feild, three time all-round cowboy in 1985-87. Feild was also the bareback champion in 1985 and 1986.

Recreation Elk Ridge Park has one ball field and a picnic pavilion.

Political profile

Elk Ridge residents cast ballots in the Salem No. 3 voting district in the 1988 presidential election. Since then, the Utah County Elections Office has established a separate voting district in Elk Ridge.

In the 1988 election, there were 298 registered voters in the Salem No. 3 district. Of those, 259 or 86.9 percent participated in the election.

George Bush received 205 or 79 percent of the votes cast in the district. Michael Dukakis received 37 or 14 percent of the vote. The question is, who did the other 7 percent vote for?

Amount of sales tax received (1990-91) $24,228.31. That's up considerably from 1989-90, when Elk Ridge received $9,229.70 in sales tax dollars.
