Fire swept through an office area at the Hungry I restaurant, 2701 S. State, causing an estimated $50,000 damage Tuesday night.
South Salt Lake Fire Capt. John Nash said an electrical problem in a portable heater appears to be the cause. No customers were in the restaurant when the fire call came in about 10:14 p.m. Only one employee was at the scene when fire crews arrived three minutes later. The employee was taken to an area hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and minor injuries, Nash said. His name was not available.
Smoke and flames were visible from a window in an office area in the southwest corner of the building as fire crews arrived.
"We got a quick knockdown on the fire in the office area, but there was some indication that it had spread into the attic and ceiling area," Nash said. Crews spent several hours dousing hot spots and clearing smoke from the building.
One firefighter received a puncture wound just below the knee from a glass fragment in a broken window.
